Diet X Light: understand this difference once and for all.

        Who has never been in doubt about the differences between diet and light. Do both types help you lose weight? Understand the characteristics of each one and learn how to choose the most suitable food for your diet

Diet food: According to the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA), the term diet is used in foods for diets with nutrient restrictions (carbohydrates, fats, proteins, sodium);

Light food: The definition of light food must be used in products that present a minimum reduction of 25% in a given nutrient or calories compared to conventional food.

            Consumers of diet products typically have specific metabolic or physiological conditions. They need specially formulated foods, which eliminate or replace components such as sugar (diabetics) and salt (hypertensive patients).

            Consumers of light products are healthy people who look for products with fewer calories or with a reduced amount of a nutrient, compared to the same food in its conventional formula. These foods are recommended, for example, in weight loss diets.

          Therefore, the difference between diet and light food is the allowed amount of nutrient. While the diet needs to be free, the light food must present a minimum decrease of 25% of nutrients or calories in relation to conventional food.

            It is important to remember that these products must be consumed in the recommended portions. People generally believe they can consume more because they have fewer calories.

            Confusion is easy to happen; therefore, read labels very carefully. Compare light and diet products with conventional foods. It is very important to check whether they meet your needs.
