Diabetes Mellitus is a syndrome of multiple origins, caused by the lack and/or inability of insulin (hormone produced in the pancreas) to perform its functions, among them, breaking down glucose molecules, allowing them to penetrate inside the cells, and transform them in energy. The use of this glucose depends on the presence of insulin, therefore, when it is not used well, there is an increase in this substance in the blood, known as HYPERGLYCEMIA. In short, diabetes is an increase in the concentration of sugar in the blood.

It is necessary to have healthy habits and a balanced diet, avoiding excessive consumption of sweets and fats, as these foods have a high sugar content. Whole foods such as bread, rice and pasta are slowly digested by the body, releasing glucose little by little, being a beneficial factor for diabetics who will not have blood sugar spikes, in addition to being rich in fiber, helping with insulin action.

It is worth highlighting the issue of fruits, as it is very common for individuals to think that they can consume them at will, as they are healthy foods, but this is not the case. Fruits have simple carbohydrates, including glucose. The ideal is to consume fruits rich in fiber such as: pear, plum, orange, tangerine, watermelon, peach, fig, among others.

Vegetables can be consumed whenever you want! In addition to fiber, they contain antioxidant vitamins and minerals, which play a fundamental role in the healthy diet of all people, and even more so for diabetics, who need to have a varied diet of these foods.

The role of a nutritionist and a doctor is essential in treating this disease, in addition to creating an individualized meal plan!
