Diet and Cancer

The incidence of cancer in Brazil has been increasing every year, being considered an increasingly common disease. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the country.

Many dietary components are associated with the development of some types of cancer, such as: breast cancer, colon cancer (large intestine), rectum, prostate, esophagus and stomach.

Foods rich in fats such as red meat, fried foods, bacon, ham, mayonnaise, foods with carcinogens such as nitrites and nitrates, found in pickles, canned goods and sausages, and smoked foods and barbecues that are impregnated with tar from coal smoke (the same component cigarette smoke) also a carcinogen, should be avoided or consumed in moderation as they create a favorable environment in the body for the development of cancer cells.

A diet low in fiber and high in fat and calories is related to a greater risk of developing colon and rectal cancer. This occurs because without fiber in the diet, the intestinal rhythm slows down, favoring greater exposure of the intestinal mucosa to the carcinogens found in its contents.

In addition to diet, some other factors are associated with the risk of developing cancer, including: smoking, physical inactivity, carcinogenic work environments and a family history of cancer. Changes in lifestyle and eating habits can help reduce the risk of developing cancer as well as heart disease, obesity and chronic diseases such as diabetes.

The intake of fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains, foods rich in nutrients such as vitamins, fiber and other compounds that help the body's defenses, should be preferred over the intake of foods rich in fats and other harmful compounds. It is worth remembering that foods only generate a protective factor when adopted constantly throughout life.
